Seasonal allergy treatment in Fresno & Merced, CA

The Central Valley is one of the hardest places in the country to have allergies — surrounded by orchards, fields, and air that traps pollen for months. Our board-certified specialists test for what's actually triggering your symptoms and work with you on a plan to help manage them.

Allergens we test for and treat

Different allergens dominate at different times of year — and some don't follow a season at all. Testing tells us which ones matter for you.

Tree pollen Roughly Feb – May

The Valley's earliest allergy wave. Almond, olive, oak, mulberry, and ash are common local sources — and with orchards on every side of Fresno and Merced, tree pollen can travel far from where it starts. Sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion in late winter and spring often point here.

Grass pollen Roughly Apr – Jul

Grasses like Bermuda, rye, and timothy pollinate through late spring and summer, and irrigated fields and lawns keep them going. If your symptoms peak when lawns are being mowed or you react after time outdoors in early summer, grass is a common culprit.

Weed pollen Roughly Aug – Nov

Ragweed, pigweed, Russian thistle (tumbleweed), and sagebrush carry allergy season into fall. Weed pollen is the usual suspect when symptoms flare late in the year, after tree and grass seasons have wound down.

Mold & dust mites Year-round

Not seasonal at all — dust mites live indoors in bedding, carpet, and upholstery, and mold thrives in damp spaces and after Valley fog and winter rain. If your symptoms don't let up when pollen drops, or they're worse indoors or at night, an indoor allergen may be the reason.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Why are my allergies worse in the Central Valley?

The Valley combines heavy agricultural pollen sources with geography that traps air between mountain ranges. Pollen and pollutants can linger longer here than in coastal areas, which is why many people notice symptoms for more months of the year.

How do I know which allergen is causing my symptoms?

Timing offers clues — spring points to trees, summer to grasses, fall to weeds, and year-round symptoms to indoor allergens — but testing is the only way to know. A skin or blood test at our clinic can identify your specific triggers.

Over-the-counter medicine isn't working. What's next?

If antihistamines aren't keeping up, an evaluation can help. Prescription options, trigger-specific avoidance plans, and immunotherapy are all approaches we may use, depending on your testing results.

Do I have allergies or a cold?

Colds usually resolve in a week or two and may involve fever or body aches. Allergy symptoms — sneezing, itchy eyes, clear runny nose — persist as long as you're exposed to the trigger. Symptoms that recur the same time each year usually suggest allergies.

Can children be tested for seasonal allergies?

Yes — we test and treat children as well as adults. See our pediatric allergy page for how visits work for kids.
